PINEWOOD GARDENS
Phil & Luella Korth

Phil and Luella Korth have been hybridizing tetraploid daylilies for 12 years. Their goal is to develop high performance daylilies for northern gardens. The key characteristics that are important to them are: hardiness, consistent opening and beautiful faces. Plant evaluation takes place out in their garden. They expect their seedlings not only to survive but thrive. They must have adequate bud count, nice foliage and be consistently beautiful to look at. They are now seeing many wonderful seedlings and are introducing flowers that are great additions to the northern gardens.
They are located in northeast Wisconsin in a zone 4 climate. Pinewood Gardens is a licensed nursery specializing in hardy northern daylilies. Their daylilies have to survive winters down to -20 degrees often with little snow. They also have cold spring weather, late frosts and cool summer nights. Only a few daylilies thrive in their climate.
This year they have twelve new introductions that have performed wonderfully in their garden. Those we have used in our hybridizing program have proven to be wonderful parents. Due to the limited number of seedlings they grow, they cannot explore all the hybridizing potential of their introductions. Therefore, they invite other gardeners interested in hybridizing to explore new opportunities using their introductions. Where possible, they do show examples of the breeding potential of their 2009 introductions. All of their introductions have grown well in their climate but the evergreen foliage types will benefit from some winter mulch.
