What's Happening          Updated March 19, 2010
All week long my good friend Willa Wick and I have been submerged in Canada Blooms. Up early, get breakfast and a quick email check, on the Queen West trolley (get a transfer) and arrive early enough to water the plants and replenish stock. On our feet with hardly a break till 8PM. Meeting lots of old friends along with many friends for the first time. Really busy most of the time. Mark Cullen's personal assistant is staffing his  booth next to us so Mark drops around frequently to check up on things. Here is the booth. I'll see if I can get another picture with us in it. You will notice not many daylilies or hostas in sight. Since the're all sleeping, we are offering clematis, brunnera, canna and peony. Our main focus at the show is to let more people know who we are, what we do and where we are. I lost my blackberry on the TTC Queen West trolley on Wednesday. It's really a big adjustment as it has become an integral part of me. Marv loaned his to me until we see if it shows up in lost and found. Spring orders have been flooding in during my absence for which I sincerely thank you.
Busy processing orders and getting last minute details ready for our week at Canada Blooms. This is the first time we are using a 10' X 5' booth and planning for such a small space is proving to be very challenging. Monday night Betty is speaking to the Milton Horticultural Society and Tuesday afternoon Canada Blooms opens.
It's really starting to look like spring. Our greenhouse heat is on and we are franticly transplanting our new arrivals. Next week we will be in booth 1122 at Canada Blooms in Toronto. Look us up and pickup a brand new plant to put on your window sill and help push back winter even more.  Betty will be speaking on Heuchera on March 17 at 1:15 in Hall A room 102. We will have for sale Australis and Black Knight Canna Lilies, Sara Bernhardt Peony, 4 varieties of Clematis, plus more. You can also pick up your marker and Hostapedia orders.

In my many years as an optometrist,  when people asked me what I "did", I would always say I was both an Optometrist and an Optimist.

After my illness took from me the ability to practice, the "optimist" part remained. And who is more optimistic than a gardener. We all see the beauty in what is to be - in what can be. And we all take the joy of that future beauty in our minds and hearts when we plan our next wee bit of heaven in our next bit of garden.

Like many gardeners, and like all optimists, I tried to convince myself that any given zone 7 plant would LOVE it in my zone 4 raised beds. And I spent many hours with the anticipation of how beautiful something would be, only to sorrowfully collect little tombstone markers the following spring. The other obsession of mine is to save everything and make more of it. Cuttings and trimmings are hoarded and propagated - again the optimist. Years of practicing, fixing problems left their mark - I did not want other gardeners to also fall prey to the tender plant siren if they were not fully aware.

We now have a few newer passions - Hosta and Heuchera and more recently, Helleborus. So join with me in our passion for hardy plants and obsession for beauty. Did I mention we now have about 3200 registered Daylilies, plus about several thousand of our own seedlings, 450 hosta cultivars, and 138 heuchera cultivars.  We also supply 2 great lines of metal markers.
